Abstract
Mutual integration of user interface design tool and computer-aided usability testing (CAUT) tool is proposed. This environment enables product engineers to adopt effective iterative design strategy in order to achieve high usability. These tools are Operation Simulating Tool (OST) and UI-tester, respectively. Having three main functions of designing, simulation and program code generation, OST has been implemented for developing user in terface of facsimile machines. UI-tester is a CAUT tool which aims at evaluating product usability by analyzing user-machine dialogue data. It can show several forms of diagrams for an evaluator to see what types of troubles users had in operating the machine. Iterative design, which means designing-simulation-evaluation cycle, had been practiced for a new facsimile product. Nine usability problems were extracted by analyzing common user error patterns with UI-tester.
