We have tried to find examples of coincidence and deviation (non-coincidence) of midlines, using the longitudinal gnathostatic models. 1. Seventy percent of midline shift occurred between the ages of 6-9 years. Thirty percent occurred after this stage. 2. Midline shifting decreased with age. The deviation established in the first stage generally remained through out adulthood. 3. The main reason for midline shift was destroyed teeth and/or extraction because of caries and others. The second most common reason was minus dento-alveolar discrepancy and the third was spaced dental arches, eccentric mandibular, or congenital absence of teeth germ. From the above-described results, on the basis of the coincidence or shift of midline, an abnormal arch must be discovered in the early stages. Proper treatment at an early stage of the abnormal arch results in successful correction of the problem.
