Three-week-old male rats of Wistar strain were given calcium-deficient food for 3 weeks and experimental bone debility was induced in them. Food was then changed to normal standard food and the effect on the debilitated alveolar bones of the treatment combined with 1α-OH-D_3 (0.1 μg/kg, oral administration), an analogue of active vitamin D_3, and eel calcitonin (0.2 U/kg, intramuscular injection) was investigated. The results were as follows : 1. Radiological findings In the calcium-deficient food + standard food + active type vitamin D_3 + ECT group and calcium-deficient food + standard food + ECT + active type vitamin D_3 group as compared with the group given only normal standard food, the alveolar bones showed thicker bone layers and increase in and regular arrangement of trabeculae. Calcium-deficient food + standard food + ECT + active type vitamin D_3 group showed the most increase in trabeculae next to the control group and about even density. 2. Findings from the analysis on the X-ray microanalyzer In relative Ca ratio and P ratio as compared with the control group, calcium-deficient food + standard food + ECT + active type vitamin D_3 group showed most approximation. 3. Histopathological findings 1) Findings form contact microradiograms In the group treated by combination with ECT and active type vitamin D_3, the alveolar bones grew thick ; Haversian canals and the surrounding bone lacunae increased ; and acceleration effect on the bone construction was recongnized. 2) Light microscopic findings In the group treated by combination with ECT and active type vitamin D_3, the bone layer adjacent to the periodontium of the alveolar bone grew thick and Sharpey's fibers in the periodontium also increased and were running regularly. Haversian canals and bone lacunae in the bone layers surrounding bone marrow also increased. 4. Hematological findings The group treated by combination with ECT and active type vitamin D_3 showed high values in serum Ca. The foregoing findings showed that the combined treatment with ECT and active type vitamin D_3 in addition to calcium in food would accelerate bone construction effectively for debilitated alveolar bone.
