Abstract
Recent progress in the studies on fine texture of minerals is reviewed from historical viewpoint. Mineralogists and petrologists have been interested in the microscopical textures of minerals; twins, zonings, exsolution lamellae and reaction textures. After it was recognised by X-ray diffraction technique that the fine textures were contained in some microscopically homogeneous minerals, the study on the fine texture of minerals became one of the main streams in mineralogy. One of the greatest progress in the study of the fine texture of minerals is the promotion of a better understanding of the subsolidus reaction of the solid solution. The progress depends on the new methodologies established in the 1970's, for the research on fine textures using electron microscope. Japanese researchers contributed significantly to the development of the high resolution microscopy. They have succeeded in the observation of the defects, superstructures and disordered structures of minerals; wollastonite, pyrrhotite, intermediate plagioclase, pyroxene, amphibole, triplechain silicate, clay minerals, etc. In addition, they made efforts to the perfection of techniques to determine the chemical composition of the fine parts of minerals using analytical electron microscope. The progress mentioned above is beginning to lead to the study of mineral behaviour, which is useful for understanding the geological process which the minerals have undergone.
