Abstract
This paper is a short review of geological researches for natural disasters which took place in Japan during a century since 1880. Summary is as follows; 1) Before the 2nd World War, these researches were mainly oriented towards large earthquakes such as the Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and to volcanic eruptions. 2) After the 2nd World War, more detailed researches by geologists started in connection with the Niigata Earthquake in 1964, and disaster map of the ground in Niigata City were published by the Niigata University and other Institutes. 3) Resently, many geologists have carried out researches for natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, debris flows, land subsidence and so on. 4) In the near future, collaborative study would become necessary as an interdiscepline branch for natural disaster researches.
