Abstract
Sendai and its environs were shaken by a strong earthquake at 5:14 PM, on the 12th of June, 1978, Japan Standard Time. Among various damages to modern cities, collapse of artificial grounds constructed for residential areas was notable. The collapse was concentrated into the upside-down fills and fills with pyroclastic materials, both of which had been constructed in cut and fill gradations in hilly lands, where the horizontal acceleration of the shock was less than 250 gal.
