日本の湖沼の最近約百年間の変化  [in Japanese] Changes of Lakes in Japan during the Past One Hundred Years  [in Japanese]

我が国においては, 約百年前には非常に多数の湖沼及び湿地が存在していた。このうち1平方キロ以上の面積の自然湖沼の明治以降の約百年間について, 新・旧版地形図及び面積資料を用いてその変化を明らかにすることを試みた。この結果, 日本の自然湖沼の地形図及び面積資料にあらわれた変化の特徴を解明できた。変化は非常に激しく, 消滅したもの, 大幅に面積の減少したもの, 部分的な変化などがあり, さらに, 周辺の湿地を含めた景観が一変したものなどがある。変化の原因の最大のものは, 干拓であり, 変化の最も目立つものは面積の減少である。湖沼の面積の減少に現れた変化は湖沼だけでなく, 周辺の湿地の景観の変化も伴っており, その変化は全体としてみると非常に激しい。

There were many lakes and marshy lowlands through the country in Japan about one hundred years ago. As for natural which have over 1 km^2 of areal extent, the author tried to clarify the characteristics of changes during the past one hundred years in comparison with former and present editions of topographic maps mainly on scales of 1:20,000 to 1:50,000 with references of areal extents of lakes. As a result, characteristics of the changes of lakes were clarified very clearly. The changes of lakes are very dramatic. Some of them disappeared and the areal extent of meny lakes decreased remarkably. The changes of areal extent of most of the lakes have been accompanied by intense change of land scape in the surrounding marshy lowlands. The most popular cause is land reclamation by draining for the increase of rice production.
