Abstract
Recently numerous evidences of paleoearthquakes have been discovered in many archaeological sites in Japan. The author gives an outline of the evidences of paleoearthquakes found out at several archaeological sites along the Median Tectonic Line in Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula. Landslide traces have been discovered in dugouts of the middle Yayoi period at the Maruyama II archaeological site in Ehime Prefecture. The traces of lique factions, probably caused by the earthquakes around A.D. 1600 and in the Tumulose to Nara period, were recognized at several archaeological sites located in the alluvial lowland along the Yoshino River in Tokushima Prefecture. Further, multiple lique faction traces including those of the late 7th century were found out in the Kawanabe archaeological site in Wakayama City. There is a large possibility that some of these traces of paleoearthquakes are associated with the recent activity of the Median Tectonic Line.
