Abstract
The Chidiwa Fault is one of the major normal faults in the Unzen Graven. Velocity of the displacement of the Chidiwa Fault is estimated on the basis of the geologic age and facies analysis of the core materials collected from the Karako Lowland, northern coast of the Tachibana Bay, West Kyushu, Japan. The sediments from -10.88 m to -9.63 m in the core consist of alternation of marine mud including shell fragments and peat composed of woods, leaves, twigs, seeds and others. This facies is considered to show that the depositional environment was near the sea level. The geologic age of these alternations was approximately 5,800 yBP. judging from the presence of Akahoya ash layer which was deposited in ca. 6,300 yBP. According to these data, the Karako Lowland which mustbe controlled by the Chidiwa Fault must have subsided more than 10.88 m since ca. 5,800 yBP. The displacement rate for the Chidiwa Fault is 2.3〜1.9 mm/year. This is concordant with other data derived from different datum criteria and displacement s
