Abstract

Within accretionary complexes, the stratal superposition and lateral continuity of their component rocks have been disrupted and fragmented during subduction-accretion processes. As a result, rocks of different type and age are mixed. Accretionary complexes, therefore, cannot be divided into ordinary lithostratigraphic units based upon the stratigraphic lithological changes, because of the disrupted and mixed nature of the rocks.Tectonostratigraphy is a descriptive classification and correlation of mixed rock-bodies, and accretionary complexes should be designated as tectonostratigraphic units. In this paper, the method for establishing tectonostratigraphic units and their nomenclature are discussed. The procedures are as follows : (1) Tectonostratigraphic units should be defined by difference in lithology and age of reconstructed oceanic plate stratigraphy, and also by distinctive occurrence, deformation style and metamorphic grade of the component rocks.(2) The hierarchy of tectonostratigraphic units is proposed as follows : the complex is the primary formal unit and it is the basal rank in the hierarchy, and a terrane is next in rank above a complex.Compared to the lithostratigraphic principles, tectonostratigraphy provides us the following aspects : lithological and chronological differences in each unit result from the property of the oceanic plate stratigraphy prior to the accretion, whereas the distinction of occurrence, deformation style and metamorphic grade relates to the accretion and the post-accretion tectonics. Tectonostratigraphy is not a new concept but most useful for describing and understanding the mixed rock-bodies of accretionary complexes.
