Abstract

Whole-rock geochemical studies of sandstones and mudstones have become increasingly common in recent years as components of studies of clastic sedimentary suites. Many are based on major and trace element data generated by standard and widely available techniques such as XRF and ICP-MS. Aspects which can be examined include provenance signatures, tectonic setting, source area weathering and tectonism, sorting, heavy mineral concentration and recycling. Interpretation is based on consideration of abundances and ratios of elements (e.g. Ca, Na, K) contained in labile phases, and less mobile or immobile elements (e.g. Si, Th, Zr, Sc, REE) residing in resistant phases which tend to accumulate in sedimentary processes. This paper briefly reviews these aspects and some of the methods which can be used, using data from New Zealand and Japanese clastic sediment suites. Geochemical techniques are a valuable complement to traditional petrographic methods, and can be applied when diagenetic or metamorphic reconstitution limits petrographic interpretation. When used in conjunction with petrography, regional geology and other information, geochemical studies are a key component in deciphering the nature, evolution and relationships of tectonostratigraphic terranes.
