Abstract

Rare earth element, Th and Sc concentrations have been examined in mainly Paleogene and Miocene sedimentary rocks along the coastal areas of the Japan Sea, from northern Kyushu to Tohoku, via Oki area in Chugoku and the Yatsuo area of central Japan. In Kyushu, LaN/YbN ratios of the Miocene samples are higher than those in the Paleogene. Average values of Th/Sc and Eu/Eu^* for the Paleogene and Miocene are almost the same, and are similar to those of the present upper continental crust (UC). The mixing model involving UC, basalt (Ba) and granite (Gr) explains the provenance signatures in these sedimenraty rocks. The models reveal compositional changes from evolved provenance to primitive source for the Yatsuo and Oga samples. Lower Miocene samples from the Oki area have a primitive provenance. Provenances for the Middle Miocene sequences in the Oki, Yatsuo and Oga areas changed significantly, due to uplift of their source areas, eruption of basic volcanics, and the birth and opening of the Japan Sea. Variation in provenance from the Oki and Yatuo areas (slightly evolved) to the Oga area (less evolved) is suggestive of differing in local crustal compositions.
