Abstract
Integrated micro- and mega-fossil biostratigraphies have provided an excellent means of correlating the Cretaceous System on a world-wide scale. A review of previous works reveals that there is a need for the establishment of biostratigraphic frameworks in various parts of the world based on multicriteria. Pursuit of such a local to regional biostratigraphy will result in the recongnition of floral and faunal provincialism in paleo-biogeography, which is closely related with paleoclimatic, paleoceanographic and other paleoenvironmental situations. Evaluation of the problem of provincialism including type-areas of the standard chronostratigraphic units may also be a fundamental step toward establishing a more precise inter-regional correlation and toward the elucidation of the history of Cretaceous Period.
