Abstract
This paper presents a sequence stratigraphic model of incised-valley fills in a wave- and fluvial-dominated setting, based on detailed facies and chronostratigraphic analyses of the latest Pleistocene-Holocene incised-valley fills in the Kanto Plain of central Japan. The latest Pleistocene-Holocene incised-valley fills in the Obitsu River lowland and the Kasumigaura-Kashima lowland have been created during the last 30 ka in the Kanto Plain of central Japan, The valley in fills have been strongly influenced by sea-level changes, in particular on their facies, systems and stacking pattern. The characteristic depositional systems and phenomena in the incised-valley fills are: (1) the braided river system during the falling and the lowstand of sea level; (2) a stacked meandering river system and a delta system charaderized by thick delta plain facies during transgression; (3) stream capture caused by stacked fluvial systems during transgression; (4) an estuarine system characterized by an estuarine-mouth sand body and headward sediment transport during transgression and the subsequent highstand of sea level; and (5) a regressive delta system characterized by thick subaqueous delta facies during the highstand of sea level.
