Apparent stacking patterns of depositional sequences in the Upper Cretaceous shallow-marine to fluvial successions, Northeast Japan

Abstract

Among several shallow-marine to non-marinc Upper Cretaceous sediments in Northeast Japan, four strata, namely 1) Mikasa Formation of the Middle Yezo Group, 2) Futaba, 3) Kuji and 4) Hakobuchi Groups, are compared from the stacking patterns of facies, system stract and depositional sequences. Geological ages of the strata are inferred from the macrofossil biostratigraphy to be 1) latest Albian to late Turonian, 2) early Coniacian to early Santonian, 3) early Santonian to early Campanian and 4) late Campanian to early Maastrichtian, respectively. Their ages do not overlap except early Santonian for the Fulaba and Kuji Groups. Sedimentary facies include alluvial fan, fluvial plain, tidal flat, coastal, shoreface and inner to outer shelf facies. The average sedimentation rate (thickness/duration) is estimated at about 1 m/10 ka for three strata except the Kuji Group (0.66 m/10 ka). Each group or formation comprises two to four third-order depositional sequences with a few parasequences. Average durations of depositional sequences range 1 to 4 m.y. at minimum (1 m.y.) in the Futaba Group and maximum (4 m.y.) in the Hakobuchi Group. The stacking patterns of depositional sequences and the timing of sequence boundaries and bounding surfaces apparently show concordance with the oscillation patterns of the Haq curves (global cycle chart). Because the average sedimentation rates are similar among four strata despite significant differences in tectonic setting, their sedimentation may have been strongly influenced by not only local tectonic movement but also global eustasy.
