Diachronous evolution of third-order depositional sequences in the Early Cretaceous forearc basins : shallow marine and paralic successions in the Sanchu and Choshi Basins, Japan

Abstract

The Lower Cretaceous successions in the Sanchu and Choshi forearc basins of Japan consist of shallow marine and paralic deposits up to 620〜1000 m thick. These deposits comprise third-order depositional sequences composed mainly of transgressive and high stand system stracts. Eight depositional sequences (DSSN1-8) developed in the Sanchu Basin during Barremian through Albian. The lower two depositional sequences (DSSN1-2) indicate about 3 m.y. cyclicity and the others (DSSN3-8) are about 1.8 m.y. In general, the depositional sequences in the Sanchu Basin are characterized by rapid transgressions and slow regressions. In contrast, four depositional sequences (DSCH1-4) developed in the Choshi Basin during Barremian through Aptian. The lowest depositional sequence (DSCH 1) indicates about 2 m.y. cyclicity and the others (DSCH2-4) are about 3 m.y. The four depositional sequences in the Choshi Basin are characterized by slow transgressions and rapid regressions. Different duration and motifs of depositional sequences in the Sanchu and Choshi Basins indicate that regional basin tectonics in the southeastern margin of the Asian continent mainly controlled third-order cycles of relative changes in sea level during the Early Cretaceous. Further more, this means that third-order sequence boundaries such those identified in the Sanchu and Choshi Basins are not synchronous and can not constrain chronostratigraphic correlation of the basin-fill successions in a convergent plate margin.
