地域地質再考 : 実社会と結びついた地質学研究・教育をめざして  [in Japanese] Reconsideration of regional geology : for the study of geology with real evidence and effective education  [in Japanese]

地域地質研究は, 日本の地質学を臨場感のあるものとして発展させるために極めて重要である。本小論では, 地域地質研究の重要性を学術的側面・応用的側面・教育的側面から検討した。(1)地質学の歴史をひもとくと, いかに多くの創造的アイデアが地球上の様々な場所の地域地質研究に基づいて提案されてきたかが分かる。(2)環境問題が人類にとって深刻になる21世紀には, 環境地質学が重要な分野となる。その重要な部分が地域地質研究であるから, 地域地質研究は人類にとって大切な一分野となる。(3)日本の地域地質研究を通して, 我々はプレートの沈み込み帯に関する多くのデータやアイデアを全世界に向けて発信することができる。(4)地質学の応用から考えると, 変動帯における地震や洪水等に関連した自然災害を予測するために, 地質図・断面図・震探図・ボーリングコアの記載等といった地域地質に関するデータを収集し, 系統的に整することが必要となる。(5)教育的側面について言うと, 最近, 小中学生が理科に興味を示さなくなっていると言われている理由は, 入学試験準備のために多くの抽象的事柄を学ばなければならないことにある。地域地質の具体的な事実を利用して教育を行えば, 生徒達に再び理科に興味を持たせることは可能である。(6)環境地質学や地域地質研究の発展のために地方国立大学の地質学関係の学科は重要な役割をはたしてきた。(7)島弧に関する独創的研究推進のために, 日本地質学会に地域地質部会をもうけることを提案した。

It is quite important to study the regional geology of Japan for the development of Japanese geology based on real evidence. The study of regional geology is fundamentally one of field geology. In the history of geology, we can see that many creative ideas were proposed based on the studies of fleld geology of various parts of the earth. In the 21st century, when environmental problems will become critical for mankind, environmental geology will be one of the important branches of natural sciences. Considering that an important part of environmental geology is regional geology means that this will be an indispensable environmental science in the next century. Another internationally important role of the study of regional geology of Japan is to investigate the geological phenomena of island arcs. In education, recently, many pupils of elementary schools and students of senior high schools in Japan are said to have no interest in natural sciences. The reason may be that they have to learn too many abstract subjects for the preparation of entrance examinations. Using concrete matters on regional geology to educate natural sciences may help to reverse this trend.
