日本地質学会構造地質専門部会は, 日本で唯一の構造地質学の研究者・技術者の組織である構造地質研究会の1965年以来の活動を基礎として結成された。本専門部会は現在構造地質学の主要な分野をふまえた次の6つの研究グループによって組織されている。それらは基礎構造地質学, 日本列島のテクトニクス, 地震地質学およびネオテクトニクス, 地殻探査および堆積盆テクトニクス, 応用構造地質学ならびに地球および惑星テクトニクスである。これら研究グループは, 共同研究の遂行, 巡検, シンポジウム, 特別講演の企画・運営などをとおして, グループ内あるいはグループ間での活動を行う。本専門部会は 1996年構造地質研究会冬の例会におけるシンポジウム「21世紀に向けての構造地質学」でその活動を開始した。このシンポジウムでは, 構造地質学の主要分野における最近のシンポがレビューされ, 今後の課題が指摘された。ここで講演された論文を中心として地質学論集を出版する計画である。

The Structural Geology Group of the Geological Society of Japan is fouded on the basis of activity of the Tectonic Research Group of Japan (TRGJP) which has been a unique organization of tectonic and structural geologistsin Japan since 1965. The Group is now tentatively subdivided into the following six subgroups which cover main branches of structural geology; analytical structural geology, tectonics of the Japanese Islands, global and planetary tectonics, seismogeology and neotectonics, crustal structure and basin analyses by geophysical exploration and applied structural geology. The subgroups will provide basic opportunities including co-research programs, transmission of current information, organization of geological excursions, symposia and special lectures for researchers, engineers and students. The Group started its activity at the symposium of 1996 winter meeting of TRGJP, entitled "The Step to the New Stage of Structural Geology in the 21st Century". In this symposium, recent progress and future perspectives of the main branches of structural geology were reviewed and presented. The results of this symposium are summarized in this special issue of the Memoir of Geological Society of Japan.
