反射法地震探査の発展と構造地質学の新たな展望  [in Japanese] New scope for the study of structural geology added by the seismic reflection method  [in Japanese]

Abstract

The seismic reflection method is establishing a status as one of the main tools for the study of structural geology. It provides a high resolution image of subsurface structures, ranging from meso- to mega-scales. Further more it also provides a great amount of data on a range of physical properties, such as elastic wave velocity, impedance, etc., each of which is essential to the study of structural geology. The Japanese Islands, which form a typical active island arc with complex geological structures and rough surface terrain, present many difficulties for the seismic reflection method. Nevertheless the method has been extending its application to the traditional area of structural geology, from the superficial zone down through the whole crust to the upper mantle. The method will surely add new scope for the study of structural geology in both tectonics and deformation.
