地震予知研究における構造地質学の役割  [in Japanese] The role of structural geology in the earthquake prediction studies  [in Japanese]

地震予知・地震防災軽減に関する研究・調査においては, 地質学関係者の貢献が切望される課題が多いにも関わらず, 活断層を除くと地質学関係者は地震に関連した基礎研究に積極的に関わってこなかった。しかし, とくに1995年1月17日の阪神・淡路大震災以降, 断層と地震テクトニクスの研究は構造地質関係者の間でも関心が高まってきた。このような状況を受けて, 日本地質学会は「地質学と地震」研究委員会を, 構造地質研究会は「地震地質・ネオテクトニクス研究グループ」を発足させた。小論では, 「地震テクトニクス」および「断層岩と断層のレオロジー」に関する研究の枠組みを提唱し, 最近の主な研究活動を紹介するとともに, 今後の主要な研究課題をまとめた。新世紀に向けて, 研究の現状と課題をまとめたいくつかの特集号を出版することを目標にいくつかの研究が進んでいる。

Studies of faults and seismotectonics have been receiving increasing attention among structural geologists in Japan in the past several years, particularly after the destructive Kobe earthquake of 17 January 1995. The Geological Society of Japan organized a research committee on "Geology and Earth quakes", and Tectonic Research Group of Japan started a research group for "Seismo geology and Neotectonics". This note summarizes current research activities in this area and major tasks for structural geologists, and suggests publication of several special issues on geologically oriented studies towards the earthquake prediction at the turning of the century.
