Abstract
After the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake, numerous scientific researches were carried out and much amount data were collected on active faults, seismic characteristics, surface rupture, building damages, and subsurface structure by many organizations and researchers. This paper reviews the kind of the scientific data obtained before and after the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earth quake, and introduces the big research projects that have been carried out after the Earth quake. Especially, data on fault activity and distribution by airphotograph and trenching survey, data on subsurface structure by seismic reflection survey, and data on stratigraphy and physical property by drillings are collected during these three years around Osaka Bay including Hanshin Area. The severely damaged area by this earthquake was well known for its neotectonic activity during Late Quaternary, and many geological and geophysical information had been collected in this area before this earthquake. However, these information was not used efficiently for seismic hazard mitigation. This indicates that distribution and explanation on these earthscience information to citizens are very important role of earth scientists.
