Abstract

The South Kitakami and Hayachine Tectonic Belts of Northeast Japan and the Kurosegawa Belt of Southwest Japan are remnants of the South Kitakami Paleoland and Kurosegawa Landmass, both consisting of the Caledonian basements and shallow marine strata ranging from Silurian to Cretaceous. Excepting the existence of Permian-Triassic accretionary complexes in the Kurosegawa Landmass, these paleolands are closely related in the geotectonic history and paleobiogeography during the Paleozoic to Mesozoic, and are considered to be originated and developed in a closely located region with same tectonic settings. The "Paleo-Ryoke Belt" (Paleo-Ryoke Land) is considered to had been an extension of the South Kitakami Paleoland, mainly based on the similarities of the ages and initial ^<87>Sr/^<86>Sr ratios between the "Permian" granitic rocks of the "Paleo-Ryoke Belt" and granitic clasts including in the Permian Usuginu-type conglomerate of the South Kitakami. This idea is, however, questionable to a degree, because, 1) the source granitic bodies of the granitic clasts in the Usuginu-type conglomerate have not been found in the South Kitakami Belt, and 2) the pre-Silurian basements and shallow marine Paleozoic strata, which characterize the South Kitakami and Kurosegawa, are almost missing in the "Paleo-Ryoke Belt".The Early Paleozoic stratigraphy of the Hida-Gaien Belt somewhat resembles to that of the South Kitakami Belt. But the Hida-Gaien Belt differs from the South Kitakami in lithofacies of the Middle-Upper Paleozoic and, particularly, in Mesozoic geotectonic history.
