Ojective. We made a database of autopsy cases of lung cancer in Gunma University School of Medicine, and investigated chronological trends of autopsied patients with lung cancer retrospectively. Materials and Methods. A Total of 559 cases of lung cancer were collected from among 7729 cases autopsied from 1947 to 1999 in Gunma University Hospital. The historical period was divided into three terms; first term from 1947 to 1964, middle term from 1965 to 1981, third term from 1982 to 1999. The total number of autopsied cases in each of these 3 periods was 1934, 3804 and 2191, respectively. Various clinico-pathological parameters were examined based on the autopsy files, and comparisons were made among the three historical terms. Results. The number of lung cancer cases significantly increased chronologically. Also, single treatment by irradiation and improvement of the diagnosis rate significantly increased. On the other hand, lung cancer cases without any treatment or with only chemotherapy significantly decreased. Our autopsy cases included a large number of lung cancers treated with irradiation therapy, but only a small number of operated cases. Conclusion. Although bias is included, the long-term examination of lung cancer during a 53-year period provides extremely valuable data to group the transition of trends in lung cancer in Japan.
