Abstract

We experienced a case of pulmonary cancer concurrent with von Recklinghausen's disease, in which a neurofibroma of the intrathoracic vagus nerve was found at surgery. Although 6 cases of neurofibroma of the intrathoracic vagus nerve concurrent with von Recklinghausen's disease have been reported in Japan, there has been no report of concurrent pulmonary cancer. No postoperative complications were observed although the tumor was extirpated with the proximal and distal portion of the vagus nerve, since it was impossible to leave the capsule of the vagus nerve intact. Pathologically, the resected lung showed the findings of well differentiated epidermoid carcinoma with cavity formation and in the remainder of the lung, bullous emphysema was observed. At present, 8 years and 7 months after surgery, there is no sign of recurrence. It is strongly presumed that emphysematous change occur frequently in von Recklinghausen's disease and the fact that the patient was a heavy smoker must have acted as important etiological factors in the development of pulmonary cancer.
