Abstract

A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with edema on the hands and face. Chest X-ray film and CT scan showed anterior mediastinal tumor and superior vena cava syndrome. The tumor was diagnosed as undifferentiated thymic carcinoma by percutaneous aspiration cytology. The patient was treated with induction chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin, ifosfamide and vindesine (VIP). Radiotherapy was started after two courses of the chemotherapy. The patient showed a partial response (96% regression) and underwent complete resection without reconstruction of great vessels. Histologic examination was negative, and he has been well 5 years after chemoradiotherapy. Which appears to have been effective in this disease.
