Abstract

The historical background and the high safety level of therapeutic plasmapheresis reveal that the safety management procedures had been developed in the course of nature and had already been practiced by the medical staff during the early days of the treatment history. Since their time, therapeutic plasmapheresis has further progressed through the development of the plasma separation membrane, the adsorbent, and the apparatus. There are several therapeutic plasmapheresis procedures. Among these options, an optimal procedure is selected for each treatment. Consequently, it is crucial to understand that the differences in the way to conduct the safety management depend on the methods and medical equipment utilized in each procedure. Meanwhile, with donor apheresis, the purpose of safety management is to make the highest endeavor to improve the reliability of the medical equipment/apparatus and to reduce the side effects on the patients. In conducting safety management, one must determine not only to strive in the advancement of therapeutic plasmapheresis, but also to promote the reliability of the national health care through the practice of safety management in therapeutic plasmapheresis, with the solid understanding of our current social trends as well as by mastering the basic knowledge of the treatment.
