Abstract
The apheresis procedure utilities various devices such as membrane plasma separators and adsorbents which are made of different materials. When blood comes in contact with the material, various reactions take place due to the blood-material interactions. The reactions are different depending on the material. In this article, the fundamental aspects of blood-material interactions are described and the biological consequences of such interactions, in other words the biocompatibility of material, are discussed.
