In Japan, donor apheresis is applied to the collection of plasma and platelets, but not to red cells (red-cell apheresis, RCA). However, RCA has some advantages in comparison with whole blood donation including ; the separation of red-cell product from plasma at the time of blood collection, the flexibility of collection conditions according to the donor hematocrit, and application for autologous transfusion. In this article, we show the preliminary results of RCA at the Hokkaido Red Cross Blood Center and discuss the advantages of the introduction of RCA in Japan.
