In order to avoid sensory injury due to nerve damage during dissection of the mucosal membrane of the lower lip, it is desirable to understand clearly the distribution of the nerve.
In this study, the course from the central end to the peripheral end of the mental nerve and its positional relationship to the basal position of the oval vestibule were observed using sillicon-impregnated specimens, which consisted of 24 jaws (45 sides) with teeth from 24 adult cadavers. In addition to them, two unfixed adult cadavers were examined for comparison with the sillicone-impregnated specimens. The labial, mental, and oral angle branches were classified into two types based on the course: straight (Type I) and curved (Type II).
In the result, the mental nerve had a high distribution density at the region from the second premolar to the canine. The vertical course from the central to the lower parts of the mucosa membrane of the lower lip was frequently observed at the premolar region. At the regions of the canine and upper part of the mucosa membrane, the oblique course of the labial branch and oral angle branch was identified in Type II. It is, therefore, suggested that these regions are susceptible to injury during dissection. On the other hand, the nerve distribution density at the region of the anterior teeth of the mandible was quite low. This suggests that the risk of nerve damage is low in horizontal dissection.
