Abstract

We surveyed inhabitants' reactions to the outdoor noise in urban and suburban areas of Nagoya city. Over 3000 inhabitants living in and out of Nagoya are asked about their views on noise. And they are also asked whether they notice each of 37 typical noise sources or not. In general, urban inhabitants react more intensely than suburban ones regarding loudness, noisiness, annoyance and sleep disturbance. Concerning to noticed rate and annoyed rate, the differences between urban and suburban are small in most of the noise categories. Traffic noise is heard by most subjects in both areas. The most annoying noise source is bosozoku (wild-riding motorcycle freak). The annoyed rate is higher than any other noise source by 15%. Many subjects feel it's irritating, exasperating and are disturbed their sleep. As for countermeasure to the noise, most of the subjects tend to make a complaint directly to the person causing the noise.
