Two vowel-matching experiments were performed to examine how the phonemic quality of matching references and/or preceding and following anchors affects central vowel perception. Experiment 1 measured the Perceptual shift related to reference and anchor conditions and Experiment 2 measured the perceptual shift related to the distance between the center-vowel and its prototype. The results of the two experiments suggest that: If the reference stimulus was phoneme-like, the subjects could compare the phonemic quality of the reference and the center-vowel and if not, they could compare their timbres. Thus, large amounts of extrapolation occurred when judging phoneme categories. The results of Experiment 2 show that the amounts of overshoot. varied as a function of the difference between the center-vowel and its prototype. The F1 frequency of the center-vowel at the maximum overshoot point was 0.6〜1.2 ERB below that of the prototype. Since the amount of overshoot at this point was 0.6〜0.8 ERB, the reduced central vowel could approach its prototype perceptually.
