Abstract
EDFAs (Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier) with 980-nm pumping can amplify 1550-nm-band optical signal with low noise. A coupling loss between a 980-nm-band pump LD (Laser Diode) and a normal fiber occurs caused by the mode field mismatch between the eliptical laser beam and the circular fiber mode. In this paper, we proposed an optical coupling system with a polarization-maintaining TEC (Thermally-Expanded Core) fiber, and fabricated LD modules. The coupling efficiency of -1.55dB (70%) is obtained.
