Abstract

It is necessary to develop new instrumental methods to identify recently appeared gemstones which are difficult to be identified by the conventional gemmological methods. Several examples are explained in this paper to demonstrate effective uses of EDS, soft X-ray transmission. FT-IR, etc. in identifying gemstones currently appearing in the market. The development of such instruments will contribute much to gemmology.
