Numerical experiments were performed using a multilevel model to clarify the generation mechanism of Kyucho (i. e. a coastal stormy strong current, induced by the Typhoon passage in Sagami Bay). The Typhoon 8818 was applied to the model domain. A solitary coastal-trapped wave (CTW) accompanied by a strong coastal current was produced along the east coast of Boso Peninsula by the southward wind associated with the Typhoon. The CTW changed its wave properties from a quasi-barotropic to baroclinic motion off the southeast coast of Boso Peninsula, with the rapid change of the bottom topography. The change of wave properties strengthened the current near the coast. After about 2 days of maximum wind at Choshi, the CTW, accompanied with a strong current, propagated into Sagami Bay, and caused the Kyucho in the bay. These results were sufficient to explain the characteristics of the Kyucho along the west coast in Sagami Bay as induced after passing of Typhoon 8818 in September 1988. The numerical experiment also indicated that the Kyucho exchanged about 43% of the surface water (above 30 m depth) in Sagami Bay.
