A Revision of the Genus Tephritis Latreille (Diptera : Tephritidae) from Japan

Japanese species of the genus Tephritis Latreille are revised. Six species, T. angustipennis (Loew), T. brachyura brachyura Loew, T. ismene Hering, T. pterostigma Chen, T. majuscula Hering & Ito and T. okera (Shinji), are redescribed and two new species, T. longicauda sp. nov. and T. saussurea sp. nov., are described. Tephritis angustipennis, T. brachyura brachyura, T. ismene and T. pterostigma are newly recorded from Japan, and the old Japanese records of T. dioscurea (Loew) and T. separata Rondani are doubtful. All Japanese species are illustrated and species distribution are plotted. Tephritis pterostigma is considered as a senior synonym of T. bipartita Hendel (syn. nov.) and T. triangula Ito (syn. nov.). Three local forms of T. majuscula are recognized. A key to all eight Japanese species of the genus Tephritis is provided. Host plants of six Japanese species of the genus Tephritis and hymenopteran parasitoids from 4 species are listed, including new host plant records for T. ismene, T. majuscula, T. pterostigma and T. saussurea.
