Abstract
Pre-emergence nests and mature larvae of the Sulawesian hornet, Vespa fervida, are described for the first time. Close relationship of V. fervida and V. luctuosa previously suggested by adult morphology is discussed in terms of nest and larval morphology. A pre-emergence colony of V. affinis with multiple foundresses is recorded from Sulawesi, suggesting that multiple foundress colonies commonly occur in tropical populations of this species.
