Daily activities in solitary stage of the founding queen of Polistes snelleni and P. biglumis were observed in Sapporo and Oketo, Hokkaido, Northern Japan. Preliminary classification of the daily activities is made according to the function of activities, setting four levels : Major division, Activity complex, Unit activity, and Elementary act. The following selected activities are described : "Self cleaning", Nest construction, Oviposition, Fanning, Water transport, Feeding animal diet, etc. 1) The solitary stage is divided into three periods : I, before the appearance of larvae ; II, from the appearance of larvae to cocoon formation, and III, thereafter to the emergence of the first worker. Some changes in queen activities in the course of nest development was observed as follows : 1. Gross active time per day increased after the appearance of larvae, probably caused by improved climatic conditions and requirement of food for larvae, etc., but net active time excluding resting decreased in Period III in both species. 2. The relative length of nest construction and other extranidal activities and resting decreased in Period II, replaced by feeding and water transport. Relative length of resting, however, increased remarkably in Period III. The importance of insolation on the queen activities was demonstrated especially in the early period of solitary stage. 2) In P. snelleni, nest construction activities showed an intimate relation with oviposition activity in Period I, but not in II. Moreover, these activities were replaced in Period II and III by cell elongation released by external stimuli, probably from developing larvae. In P. biglumis, no marked correlation was found between nest construction and oviposition even in Period I. 3) The queen gave flesh pellets of animal to third to fifth instar larvae and fluid to all young and old larvae. Some additional differences in activities were noticed between two species : 1. Pe tiole reinforcement is made by mere salivary coating in P. snelleni, while by pulp in P. biglumis. 2. Duration of oviposition, longer in P. snelleni 189 sec., s. d. ±48.98 than in P. biglumis 112 sec., s. d.±29.34.
