The life histories of two coexisting Dinarthrodes species, complicatus and satoi, were studied in the Ogawa Creek, a mountain stream near Sapporo. In D. satoi the larvae grew up in autumn and overwintered at the fifth (final) instar stage and the adults occurred in June. On the other hand, D. complicatus usually overwintered at the second to third instar stages, grew up to the fifth during spring to early summer and emerged in August. The period of appearance of the fifth instar larvae in both species were temporarily different from each other in all the streams surveyed in Hokkaido. The guts of the larvae in both species were chiefly filled with fragments of leaves, although those of the first instar larvae were mainly filled with detritus.
