Abstract

The summer pupae of Neope niphonica in the Boso Peninsula took about one month longer than those in other parts of the Kanto district for development at constant temperatures between 16 and 25℃ under photoperiods longer than 15 h. This prolonged pupal period is due to summer diapause and of adaptive significance. The delayed emergence of summer adults results in development of the second-generation larvae occurring in early fall and increasing fitness in the warm climate of the Boso Peninsula. The summer diapause is a physiological trait that characterizes the Boso population as an ecological as well as morphological subspecies.
