Abstract
Morphologies of larval instars of the apterous viviparous female, oviparous female and fundatrix of Aphis gossypii GLOVER are described. The three morphs can be effectively distinguished in the larval stage by the shape and number of segments of the antennae, shape of the cornicle and cauda, shape and length of the setae on the 8th abdominal tergite, and number of setae on the genital plate and rudimentary gonapophyses. The first and second instars can be distinguished only by the number of antennal segments, and the fourth instar differs from the preceding instar by the number of setae on the rudimentary gonapophyses and the presence of setae on the part corresponding to the genital plate of the adult. The second and third instar larvae can be determined by a combination of two or three morphological characteristics : body length, cornicle length, antenna length, and the number of setae on the cauda and anal plate.
