Abstract
The fundatrix of the gall-forming pemphigid aphid, Paracolopha morrisoni, produces a few defensive larvae in addition to, on average, 21 normal larvae in the closed gall. The defenders are first instars and attack insect predators with their stylets. They do not molt to the second instar and therefore are sterile. Such a small number of defenders may be effective in counterattacking small predators which tunnel and invade galls.
