The genus Limnephilus LEACH (Trichoptera, Limnephilidae) in Japan

We revise a list of species of Limnephilus (Trichoptera : Limnephilidae) recorded from Japan based on re-examination of specimens that supported previously published records, and on examination of additional material available to us. Although 17 species were previously recorded from Japan, only 11 species could be confirmed : alienus MARTYNOV, correptus MCLACHLAN, diphyes MCLACHLAN, fuscovittatus MATSUMURA, nipponicus SCHMID, orientalis MARTYNOV, ornatulus SCHMID, quadratus MARTYNOV, sericeus (SAY), sparsus CURTIS and stigma CURTIS. Apatania fuscostigma MATSUMURA is synonymized with Limnephilus sericeus, and Limnephilus ukibaensis KOBAYASHI is synonymized with Limnephilus orientalis MARTYNOV. We conclude that L. affinis CURTIS, L. apicalis MARTYNOV, L. borealis ZETTERSTEDT, L. decipiens KOLENATI and L. politus MCLACHLAN were incorrectly recorded from Japan as a result of misidentifications. The male and female genitalia of Limnephilus species now known from Japan are illustrated.
