Comparative Studies on the in-Nest Behaviors of Small Carpenter Bees, the Genus Ceratina (Hymenoptera, Anthophoridae, Xylocopinae) : I. Ceratina (Ceratina) cucurbitina, Part 2

Abstract

Following Part 1, this Part 2 describes sequences of various behavior chains in post-laying, mother-juvenile cohabiting, and dispersal periods, with relevant ethological descriptions. Main ethological features of Ceratina cucurbitina in these periods are : 1-Cleaning brood cells present (≒ Ceratinidia, ≠ other Ceratina s. str.), though less skillfully (≠ Ceratinidia), moving cell partitions by callows present (≒ Ceratinidia, ≠ other Ceratina s. str.), intranidal adjustment among callows undeveloped (≒ Ceratina s. str., ≠ Ceratinidia). The following aspects were compared with other congeners in concluding remarks : 1-Possibility of the caste-linked sociality in C. cucurbitina, 2-Four types of egg placement, 3-Presence or absence of cleaning brood cells among congeners, 4-Various types in removal of cell partitions, and 5-Role of behavior chains in the post-laying period, possibly to lower the immature mortality.
