Abstract

Pseudoregma bambucicola is a subtropical aphid with a distinct soldier caste. In field studies over four years in southern Kyushu, Japan, the peak numbers of soldiers corresponded precisely with the seasonal development of larvae with wing pads (immature sexuparae). The soldiers are evidently produced mainly to defend the immature sexuparae, but, as the sexual phase of this species is unknown in Japan, these sexuparae are apparently useless.
