Abstract
Characteristics of a TiNi-based shape memory alloy welded using friction welding were investigated. It was found that friction welding could be performed in air and that the transformation temperatures, tensile properties and shape memory characteristics of the joints could be maintained similar to those of the base metal provided that proper heat treatment is carried out after friction welding. An upsetting pressure of at least 127.8 MPa seems to be necessary for obtaining sound welds.
