The buckling load of welded compression members of 6061-T6 rectangular solid section and 6063-T5 rectangular tube section is investigated experimentally and theoretically in two ways of welding, longitudinally and transversely in the aluminum alloy member. Principal points in the procedure of this study are summarized in the following conclusions. 1) The buckling strength of welded compression members becomes less than that of those not welded in the range where slenderness ratio is small. This tendency becomes claerer when the heat affected zone is larger and gets nearer to the center of the member. 2) The larger, the slenderness ratio the decrement of buckling strength by welding becomes the less. 3) As far no local buckling occurs, the experimental value and the theoretical value of buckling strength are almost the same in condition that the decrement of strength and hardness by welding is considered in analysis.
