Abstract

Flower-visiting habit of Ceratina japonica Cockerell was examined during from April to October of 1952-1959. The females appeared in April from winter-quarters, and they visited flowers for pollen eating and nectar sucking. About 30 days after appearance, they began nidificating, and changed into the complete form of request in flower-visiting. Autumn emerged males and females visited flowers for nectar sucking only, and after this, both sexes entered into winter-quarters. They seem to take nutrition only for the coming hibernation. The females visited flowers of 52 species belonging to 20 families. Out of them, Taraxacum plalycarpum, Cirsium japonicum, Geranium nepalense, Astragalus sinicus, Trifolium repens, Brassica campestris subsp., and Ranunculus acris were visited dominantly by this species. It seems that Ceratina japonica has polylectic habit in flower-visiting, however, it shows remarkable preference to the flowers of Compositae.
