We investigated cue interactions between binocular stereopsis and contour shapes for depth perception. We used random-dot stereograms of corrugated surfaces, where the upper and lower sides were shaped like sinusoidal waves to provide pictorial depth cues. The depth information of contour shapes was either coherent or conflictive to that of binocular disparity. Observation of the conflict stimulus showed that two different depths are never seen simultaneously. When the observing duration was longer than several tenths of a second, a stable surface provided by binocular stereopsis was observed. However, measuring the time required for perceiving stereoscopic depth revealed the influence of the contour shape on time. Coherent depth from the contour shape speeded up the processing of stereoscopic depth in comparison with the conflictive depth cue (experiment 1). Since the effect of pictorial cues on the stereoscopic depth was found even when the contour was defined only by texture differences (experiment 2), it seens that depth based on contour shape is not restricted to the luminance pathway.
