Gokan (the illustrated stories published in Edo since 1807) show in their illustrations the portraits of Kabuki actors. And in many other illustrations we can see in the costumes of men and women many designs which were used by Kabuki actors for stage costumes. For example, Danjuro Ichikawa, outstanding Kabuki actor, was the first to wear a costume with the well-known design of "Kama-wa-nu" (combination of "Kama" (sickle), "Wa" (circle) and "Nu" (Japanese letter), phonetically pronounced "kamawanu", which means "Hand off my business.") We can find those designs in many Gokan illustrations. These desings became increasingly popular among the citizens of Edo who read Gokan. Santo-Kyoden was greatly interested in the costumes of these illustrations. And we can find "Kama-wa-nu" designs very often in his works. As the relationship among Kabuki, Gokan illustrations and the fashion of costumes of this period has been neglected for a long time, the author intends to show this relationship by some examples.
