S-Glycoproteins (S-locus-specific glycoproteins) in Brassica species are present only in stigmas and thought to play an important role in self-incompatibility system. The stigma extract contains also several other glycoproteins reacting with the antiserum to S-glycoproteins, among which some glycoproteins from S_8S_8- and S_9S_9-homozygotes have the same pI value. Both of the glycoproteins which were tentatively termed NS_8- and NS_9-glycoproteins, respectively, were isolated and analyzed. Those were revealed to be identical. Its amino acid sequence was homologous with the S-glycoproteins in Brassica species. The NS-glycoproteins were expressed at the same time and only in stigma as S-glycoproteins.
